Mass Displacement Continues: 1.9 Million Internally Displaced

The scale of internal displacement in Gaza has reached levels unprecedented in modern conflict. According to OCHA, approximately 1.9 million people — roughly 85% of the population — have been displaced from their homes, many multiple times.\n\nThe International Crisis Group describes the displacement pattern as "a systematic policy of population transfer," noting that evacuation orders have progressively shrunk the areas designated as safe zones while failing to provide adequate shelter, water, or sanitation in those areas.\n\nFamilies describe harrowing journeys on foot, carrying what possessions they can, often with injured or elderly relatives. Makeshift shelters made from salvaged materials and donated tarpaulins dot the landscape of designated humanitarian zones, where overcrowding has created conditions ripe for disease outbreaks.\n\n"Each displacement compounds the trauma," explains Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei, director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme. "Children who have been displaced multiple times show symptoms of severe psychological distress — nightmares, bed-wetting, selective mutism, and profound anxiety."\n\nThe Foundation for Middle East Peace has noted that the pattern of displacement mirrors historical precedents that preceded permanent population transfer, raising serious questions about the long-term intentions behind current military operations.
